Scribbles the Owl
Scribbles the Owl says…
"Hey there! I'm Scribbles, your Progeny Press guide for elementary students. Can you imaging having to travel 150 miles, without GPS, without a map, and as a kid?! That's what the Muldie brothers have to do to get to their father and their new home in Wagon Wheels, which is based on a true story! Come on, I'll show you what you can learn in this guide."
The story: In 1878, Ed Muldie and his three sons leave Kentucky to take advantage of the free land offered by the United States government through the Homestead Act. They settle in Nicodemus, Kansas, and build a dugout home to live in for the winter. During the harsh winter, the people of Nicodemus are saved from starvation by the Osage Indians who bring them food. The following spring, Ed Muldie leaves his boys with the people of Nicodemus while he travels ahead to find a place to build a home. While living by themselves in the dugout, the three boys narrowly escape a prairie fire. When a letter from their father finally arrives, the three boys must travel 150 miles by themselves to reach their new home.

Literary Techniques

Write like an author — How to use words to their fullest potential

This guide goes beyond basic comprehension to teach students how memorable writing works. Through carefully designed activities, students explore the literary techniques in Wagon Wheels, including:

  • Fact vs. Opinion — Students identify the difference between objectively true statements, and personal opinions
  • Compound Words — Learn how words can be combined to create brand new words

We introduce language arts skills that build the literary appreciation children carry into more advanced study.

5
Moral Lessons & Character Values

Faith-centered ELA study — lesson by lesson

Every page of the farmer's journey offers opportunity for character study and personal growth. This literature guide draws out the moral and spiritual dimensions of the story, exploring themes such as:

Helping Others
We are called to work together and help those in need
Courage and Faith
How to stay brave and trust in God's care

Each theme is tied directly to Scripture, so faith and literature grow together — not separately.
