Description

A heart-wrenching and touching coming-of-age tale set in the 1930s South, poisoned by bigotry and racism. Scout will witness her father, a white lawyer, defy public opinion to defend a black man falsely accused of rape.
In the sleepy southern town of Maycomb, Alabama, Scout Finch and her brother Jem revel in the glory days of childhood, trading stories and superstitions with Dill Harris, the imaginative nephew of their neighbor. Dill is especially fascinated with the legends surrounding the mysterious Boo Radley, who stays in his house all day, but, according to rumors, comes out at night to dine on squirrels and cats and peek in windows. Their summer days are spent adding to the Boo Radley legends or devising ways to make Boo come out.
Scout becomes increasingly uneasy about playing games that revolve around Boo Radley. Guided by the wisdom of her father, Atticus, and Calpurnia, their cook, Scout is learning the ways and unwritten rules of southern society and how to get along in it.
Atticus is a lawyer with an extremely difficult case on his hands. Tom Robinson, a black man, has been accused of raping a white girl. With deep-seated prejudice working against him, Atticus fights to prove his client innocent. Scout and Jem watch while their otherwise civilized neighbors show subtle disapproval or outright distaste for Atticus's defense of a black man.

Good moral analysis; needs more annotation

I love these guides for the scriptural lessons they bring in. What would improve them ten-fold would be questions listed by chapter instead of by chapter groups. Just a simple note after each question of the chapter being referenced would help a lot. Thank you!

Study Guide for "To Kill a Mockingbird"

I found the study guide to be appropriate for the recommended grade level, with enough depth to the questions and the background information. There was a good mix of opinion and comprehension activities. A few more longer-response writing activities would be appreciated.

    Son is enjoying it!

My son has been using this guide for only two weeks so far, but told me today that he is enjoying doing it. I must say that I am also really appreciating it and enjoying reading and discussing my sons answers to the study guide questions. It is very well written, and gets the student to think deeply about some of the issues brought out in the novel. I think we will definitely be purchasing another progeny press guide to use when we have completed this one.

    To Kill A Mockingbird E-Guide

To Kill A Mockingbird is one of the most beloved novels of all time. I have been waiting eagerly until my oldest son was ready to read it and really understand the depth of the characters and their journeys. I am very, very pleased with this study guide. I am currently using it with my 8th grade son (an advanced reader). The vocabulary section of this guide (every three chapters there is a vocabulary list. Sometimes my son has to guess the definition based on the context, sometimes he is required to look up the definition and then write a sentence) is absolutely excellent; in fact, we are printing out those pages to add to his future SAT study list. But, I am even more pleased with the Questions as well as the "Dig Deeper" questions that bring my son back to questions about race, prejudice, integrity, respect for others. I was especially pleased with a few questions that asked my son to guess what was going to happen from foreshadowed words and phrases in the text. My tech savvy son REALLY enjoys typing his answers right into the E-guide. It is simple for me -someone who is not very tech savvy- to enter my comments, and he enjoys clicking on the "word bubbles" next to his answers and reading my comments. Wonderful study guide! Thank you, Progeny Press!

    So excited!

When I got my current teaching position, the previous teacher had left a copy of your study guide for The Great Gatsby. I loved it, so it finally dawned on me to check the internet to see if your company was still around and had other study guides. I have purchased three of your E-Guides now, and I am happy with all of them. I love how your guides use Bible verses to tie God's truth to the themes of the novels, and apply these ideas to the student's lives as well. I love your resources so much that I just spent my own money for them because I didn't want to wait until next year to get my school's approval so that the school would purchase them. I was so excited when I saw you had other titles I teach, that I just couldn't wait! Teaching in a small school means that I teach 7 different preps, so that means a lot of different novels and plays. It has been such a blessing to have your guides as a time-saver so that I don't have to come up with all of my own materials.

    To Kill A Mockingbird

Having the study guide downloaded to my computer was great. I was able to print out the pages I needed for my son immediately without waiting on the mail. It worked out really well for us, and I plan on purchasing 2 more study guides to finish out his senior year.
