Scribbles the Owl
Scribbles the Owl says…
"Hey there! I'm Scribbles, your lower elementary Progeny Press guide. Have you ever had a dream? Something you really wanted to do? Well, Alice Rumphius did! She wanted to see the world, and that's exactly what she gets to do in Miss Rumphius! There are so many wonderful things to discover and learn as you follow her journeys, and see how she keeps her promise to her grandfather. Come on, let me show you what you can learn!"
The story: Miss Rumphius is the life story of Miss Alice Rumphius, otherwise known as the Lupine Lady, as told by her young niece and namesake, Alice. When she was young, Miss Rumphius set two goals for herself: she would follow in her grandfather's footsteps and travel to faraway places, and then she would settle down in a house by the sea. Her grandfather tells her there is one more thing she must do. She must do something to make the world more beautiful. As an adult, Alice does travel the world and live in a house by the sea, but she does not know how she can make the world more beautiful. Then, an unexpected discovery gives her a wonderful idea.

What's Inside the Study Guide

1
Historical Background

Travel around the world

Students will learn about international travel — distances, travel methods, transit times, common tourism routes, and how people would prepare and pack for their journeys.

We don't want boring history lessons. That is why we focus on fascinating historical tidbits that help students understand and appreciate the story.

2
Author and Illustrator Biography

Barbara Cooney — The artist with a penchant for writing

Students will read about the talented Barbara Cooney. They will learn how her own life and passions shaped her career and works, leading to a collection of stories that have touched and moved generations of readers worldwide.

3
Vocabulary Development

Making words make sense — learn by doing, not memorizing

Vocabulary in our language arts guide engages students with a selection of activities designed to build real word retention and growth. We don't bury students with rote memorization that they parrot for a test and then forget. Students actually engage with the book and build the kind of rich vocabulary that improves their reading comprehension and their own writing.

  • Use synonyms to stretch and strengthen your vocabulary
  • use contextual clues to identify the meaning of unfamiliar words
  • Complete a word search, which helps pattern recognition, spelling, and vocabulary retention in a fun activity
Scribbles
"I love how this literature study builds higher-order thinking skills without feeling like busy work — kids aren't drowned with endless questions. They analyze, discuss, and connect elements of Miss Rumphius' life to their own faith and values."

Literary Techniques

Read like a writer — How memorable stories are told

This language arts guide goes past surface comprehension and teaches students how memorable writing works. Through carefully designed activities, students explore the literary techniques in Miss Rumphius including:

  • Plurals — Students identify how words change from singular to plural
  • Visual Clues — Using visual clues in the illustrations or around us can help us understand new words
  • Context — Using the surrounding text to better understand vocabulary and events
  • Characterization — We learn about characters in the story by looking at their words, actions, and relationships

We introduce language arts skills that build the vocabulary children carry into more advanced study.

5
Moral Lessons & Character Values

Faith-centered literature study — lesson by lesson

Every page of Miss Rumphius' journey offers opportunity for character study and personal growth. This literature guide draws out the moral and spiritual dimensions of the story, exploring themes such as:

Honoring Parents
Respecting and honoring parents and grandparents
Planning
Taking time to make wise plans
Hospitality & Serving Others
Opening our hearts and homes to others in true kindness. Finding ways we can help and serve others
Caring for God's World
Caring for nature around us, the world and animals He entrusted to our care
Responsibility
Being responsible with the abilities and gifts God has given us

Each theme is tied directly to Scripture, so faith and literature grow together — not separately.
