Scribbles the Owl
Scribbles the Owl says…
"Hi there! I'm Scribbles, your Progeny Press guide. This book study is an instant family favorite! The Minstrel in the Tower is one of those books that is full of adventure, bravery, and perseverance. Let me show you what is inside!"
The story: Roger and Alice live alone with their mother in a tiny cottage. Their father, a knight, left five years earlier to fight in the Crusades and never returned. Roger and Alice are sent by their mother, who is sick and feverish, on a journey to find an uncle they did not know they had. They take with them their mother's lute. "Show him the eagle carved on the back," she tells her children. "Ask him to come quickly. Quickly!" Their journey is complicated when they are captured by outlaws, and their lute (their only proof of identity for their uncle) is stolen. Alice, the better climber of the two, climbs out of the tower from a high window. Now she journeys alone, and somehow must find her uncle and persuade him to help.

Literary Techniques

Reading like a writer — building true literary appreciation

This study guides the student deeper than simple comprehension to teach students how great literature is created. Through carefully designed activities, students explore the literary techniques that make The Minstrel in the Tower so memorable and effective, including:

  • Similes — See how authors use similes to help us envision things in the story, by comparing them to something we are familiar with
  • Flashbacks — Spot clues an author plants ahead of time, developing habits that make students stronger, more attentive readers
  • Synonyms — See how authors use words that have the same or similar meaning to add nuance and interest to stories
  • Descriptive Writing — Explore descriptive language, learning how authors create clear images in our imaginations with their writing
  • Alphabetizing — How to sort and organize language consistently

These are foundational ELA skills that build the literary appreciation children carry into more advanced study.

5
Moral Lessons & Character Values

Christ-centered character study — lesson by lesson

Each chapter of Roger and Alice's journey offers a wonderful opportunity for meaningful character growth. This guide draws out the moral and spiritual dimensions of the story, exploring themes such as:

Obedience
Listening and obeying even when the reason is unclear, uncertain, or difficult
Perseverance and Courage
How to be brave in any situation
Kindness and Compassion
Helping others through our words and actions
Forgiveness
The healing power of grace and forgiveness
Dependability and Integrity
Evaluate the consequences of both honesty and lying

Each theme is tied directly to Scripture, so faith and literature grow together — not separately.
