What's Inside the Study Guide

1
Historical Background

Discover the Landscape of Slavery in the United States

Learning about the uncomfortable history of Slavery in the United States gives students context for how far we have come, and appreciation for the rights and freedoms we experience today. They will also learn that not all people were bad — there were many that worked to free slaves through the Underground Railroad, a system of safe houses and travel points that smuggled runaway slaves to freedom in Canada.

This isn't just boring history lessons they have to read through. It shows how America has grown, and it teaches empathy and compassion for those around us.

2

Moral Lessons & Character Values

Faith-centered character study — lesson by lesson

Tommy's journey offers an opportunity for meaningful lessons and character growth. Progeny Press' literature guide draws out the moral and spiritual dimensions of the story, exploring themes such as:

Strong Character
Learning what characteristics are admirable and good
Being Obedient
Listening to our parents, even when it's hard
Upholding What is Right
Doing the right thing, even if it comes with risk
Loving Our Neighbors
Caring for and helping those around us

Each theme is tied directly to Scripture, so faith and literature grow together — not separately.
