Scribbles the Owl says…
"Hi there! I'm Scribbles, your Progeny Press guide. This book study is a masterpiece of feel-good perseverance. Anna's mother teaches her how to be patient, kind, and plan ahead. Let me show you everything you can learn in this guide!"
The story: A New Coat for Anna is the story of a young girl, Anna, and her mother, living in the aftermath of World War II. The war may be over, but the stores are still empty, there is very little food, and no one has any money. Anna has outgrown the winter coat she has worn for years, so her mother comes up with a plan to get her a new one. With patience, hard work, and sacrifice, Anna and her mother, over the course of a year, are able to finally get Anna a new coat.
Author Harriet Ziefert based A New Coat for Anna on the true story of Ingeborg Schraft Hoffman, M.D., whose mother, Hanna Schraft, began with a few belongings and ended by providing her daughter with a beautiful, new coat.

Scribbles
"What I love is how this guide builds higher-order thinking skills without feeling like endless busy work — kids aren't just answering the same types of questions, they're observing, predicting, and connecting Anna and her mother's actions to their own faith and values."

Literary Techniques

Reading like a writer — building true literary appreciation

This guide goes beyond simple comprehension to teach students how great writing works. Through carefully designed activities, students explore the literary techniques that make A New Coat for Anna so timeless and effective, including:

  • Sequencing and Timelines — Reinforce story structure and chronological thinking.

These are base ELA skills that build the literary appreciation children carry into more advanced study.

5
Moral Lessons & Character Values

Faith-centered character study — lesson by lesson

Every chapter of Anna's journey offers an opportunity for meaningful character study and growth. This guide draws out the moral and spiritual dimensions of the story, exploring themes such as:

Patience and Understanding
Why waiting is necessary, and patience leads to wisdom
Trust and Faith
Trusting God's plan and that good things come to those who wait
Character Qualities
How hard work, resourcefulness and integrity benefit us
Perseverance and Sacrifice
Continuing through hardship, and giving selfless love

Each theme is tied directly to Scripture, so faith and literature grow together — not separately.
