Newbery Honor Award Winner 1955 • Lewis Carroll Shelf Award Winner

Based on a true story. In 1707, eight-year-old Sarah Noble journeys with her father into the wilderness of Connecticut. There her father builds a house and clears land, while Sarah keeps camp and cooks. There are many things to be afraid of in the wild, but she always reminds herself to keep up her courage by holding the red cape her mother sent with her and repeating her mother's words: "Keep up your courage... Keep up your courage, Sarah Noble!"
When her father leaves to bring the rest of the family back Sarah is left in the care of a neighboring Indian tribe, where she learns the meaning of trust and friendship.
